Best Industrial IoT Platforms for Manufacturing

Manufacturing is the vertical where the brownfield problem hits hardest. Nobody's building a greenfield factory from scratch with brand-new PLCs on modern Ethernet — most evaluations happen against equipment that's ten, twenty, thirty years old, running protocols the vendor's demo environment has never seen. That reality should drive the comparison, and most "best platform" lists ignore it entirely in favor of generic feature checklists.

This comparison scores platform categories, not individual products, against the criteria that actually separate a manufacturing deployment that works from one that stalls at the pilot stage.

The criteria that matter for manufacturing specifically

Brownfield protocol coverage. Not "supports Modbus" in the abstract — actual tested coverage against legacy Allen-Bradley DH+/DH-485, Siemens S5 AS511, and the firmware-version-specific quirks that break claimed compatibility. Hardware affinity vs. independence. Automation-vendor platforms (Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider) connect natively to their own equipment and treat everything else as a second-class integration. Independent platforms treat all hardware as equally foreign, which is worse for homogeneous environments and better for mixed-vendor floors.

Deployment model. Manufacturing floors often have connectivity, security, and latency constraints that push toward on-prem or hybrid deployment rather than pure cloud. A platform architected cloud-first sometimes bolts on edge capability as an afterthought.

Pilot-to-scale path. A platform that works in a single-line pilot and falls over across twelve lines and three plants is a common failure mode. Pilot structure matters as much as platform choice here.

What this table doesn't tell you

Category strength is a starting filter, not a final answer. Two platforms in the same category can differ enormously on the details that actually determine whether your specific PLCs, your specific firmware versions, and your specific network topology work on day one. Test compatibility against your real equipment before any category-level comparison substitutes for that.
